Change in Councils and Assemblies Reporting to the IRS

All councils need to be made aware of - regardless of how much money they take in each year, all councils must file with the IRS starting this year.

I have just been made aware of a change in councils and assemblies reporting to the IRS.  Please see the attached documents. In the past, assemblies and councils had to file with the IRS if they were taking in more than $25,000 in gross receipts.  Starting this year, all assemblies and councils have to file with the IRS regardless of how much money they take in.  The Supreme Legal Department sent emails to council and assembly officers advising them of this change, but there are people who do not have computers so may not have received this information.  If you know of anyone who does not have a computer and they would like a copy of the packet, they could contact the Legal Department and request a paper copy.  The form needed  is Form 990-N and it is an E-Postcard.  This could be obtained by going on the following website:  www.irs.gov

This website gives instructions about what is needed to file and how to do it.

form was designed for acquiring Council information but will work for Assemblies and Auxiliaries as well. We publish all the information for the Councils but only publish the president’s contact information for Auxiliaries and the Faithful Navigator’s contact information for Assemblies. We also publish the meeting location address and meeting day/night and times for Auxiliaries and Assemblies if we can get it.

For Councils and Assemblies, please be aware that this form contains information that is not included in your Forms 185 and 186 that are supplied to the Supreme Council. Please complete this form and send it to me with a copy to Maurice Dupont, State Deputy Elect, as soon as the information is available. We are aware that some Councils will not hold elections until late June. We ask that once your election is held that you complete and submit this information immediately so that we can finish compiling all the data and have it printed and ready for distribution at the July State Council Meeting to be held in Montgomery.

Every year I am quizzed about why I have a place for the spouse of the Chaplain. Some councils have deacons as their Chaplain and some have lay members as their Chaplain, so it is possible, although not probable, that a Chaplain can have a spouse.
