State Deputy
Remarks
Eddie
Lipscomb, Alabama State Deputy
Worthies All:
Thank you
for a fairly successful October Blitz, I believe that as we become more
accustomed to having the Oct. and Mar. Blitz's we will see the benefit
and become much more successful in this program. Please be sure to
contact all candidates that expressed interest in our Order and schedule
1st degrees soon to bring these candidates into your councils. I also
encourage all councils to select their 10 "Stars"; remember these are
the 10 most active Knights in your council and the members that have the
most to gain from a successful recruiting year. Let them be the team
leaders for recruiting and retention purposes and your council will reap
the benefit of their expertise and energy.

Scouting
For Knights
Dr. Thomas Sisk, State Catholic Scouting Chairman
As your
chairman for Catholic Scouting in the state, it has been a productive
year. So far two new units have been formed with plans to build two
more in the near future. A long time scouter, 26 years experience, I am
excited about the many possibilities for youth ministries that lay
before us through the sponsorship of scouting units. The LDS church
uses this program in all of their congregations and for many good
reasons; reasons that merit our own consideration.

Pro-life
Report
Frank Y.
Johnson, Pro-Life Chairman
There are
many aspects of the pro-life movement which could be addressed in this
newsletter. I am sure there are also many pro-life activities in the
councils around the state which could be applauded. However, one
activity has come to my attention of which I would like everyone to be
aware. Bry Shields is 22 years old, a student at UAB, DGK of St. Pauls
council 9862, and a member of “Students for Life” at UAB. He and fellow
members of “Students for Life” are planning a trip, for about 10
students, to Washington for 1/22, the 33rd
anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Today we all are preoccupied by the date
9/11, and with good reason. As horrible as that day was with its loss of
innocent lives, how much more horrible is the assault on innocent life
from within, that gained such momentum 33 years ago on 1/22 with the
legalization of abortion. How many millions have died as a result of
abortions since that day?

Keep
Christ in Christmas
Each year the Knights of Columbus supports the Keep Christ in Christmas
campaign to remind people that Christmas is above all else a holy day to
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. To help deliver the Keep Christ in
Christmas message, the Order offers a variety of posters and other
materials as well as public service announcements (PSAs) for radio and
television.

State Treasurer Remarks
Ray Carney, State Treasurer
Brother Knights,
I want to
remind you of two things: First, make sure your Council has paid its
Per Capita billing for 2006 (2007 bills will be mailed in January).
Secondly, make sure that your M/R checks are made out properly. This
account is with Smith Barney, and they WILL NOT accept checks that are
not made out EXACTLY as the account reads. Checks must be made payable
to Alabama K of C M. R. Fund. Any variation will not be accepted by the
bank! I have received a few checks that have been made out incorrectly,
and unfortunately, I’ve had to return them to the Councils.

Spiritual
Pilgrimage Comes to a Conclusion as Pope Benedict Returns from Trip to
Turkey
As
Pope Benedict XVI returned to Vatican City at the conclusion of his
four-day visit to Turkey, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson thanked all
who participated in the worldwide spiritual pilgrimage of prayer for the
pope during his journey, organized by the Knights of Columbus.
“I am
especially grateful to the many bishops and priests who encouraged
Catholics in their dioceses and parishes to join in this prayerful
support for the Holy Father and his important mission in Turkey,”
Anderson said. “The pope made a significant contribution to the
promotion of Christian unity in his meeting with the Orthodox Ecumenical
Patriarch Bartholomew I, and made an important overture of peace and
good will to Muslims everywhere in his visit to the Blue Mosque with
Mustafa Cagrici, the Grand Mufti of Istanbul. We pray that his visit and
genuine expressions of concern and respect for all will bear fruit in
improved mutual understanding and a broader acceptance of religious
freedom.”

From
The State Advocate
Steve Koach, State Advocate
At the
regional meetings I briefed everyone on the importance of securing some
form of liability insurance to protect the council and its leadership
from any legal action during the conduct of any social or fundraising
activities. I have posted this information on the State Website as well
as instructions on how to incorporate the council. We live in a world
where unscrupulous individuals are seeking a fast buck and will look for
any opportunity to take legal action against any organization they feel
they will be able to provide a substantial settlement.

Squire Advancement Program
Dan Gardner, State Squires Chairman
When, in
1926, Brother Barnabas, founder of the Squires, introduced into the,
then, one year old Squires program, a 128 step "Program of Activities,"
he had developed an early model of today's new "Squire Advancement
Program." As with Brother Barnabas' "Program of Activities," the "Squire
Advancement Program" is designed to foster intensive Squire leadership
development by allowing each Squire to advance at his own pace through a
series of activities, leading to higher levels of achievement and
recognition. Any Squire who achieves the highest level of recognition,
as a "Squire of the Body of Christ," will, of necessity, have been
well-schooled in the basics of the faith and Church, the Knights of
Columbus, and life in marriage, family and community.
