Squire Advancement Program

When, in 1926, Brother Barnabas, founder of the Squires, introduced into the, then, one year old Squires program, a 128 step "Program of Activities," he had developed an early model of today's new "Squire Advancement Program." As with Brother Barnabas' "Program of Activities," the "Squire Advancement Program" is designed to foster intensive Squire leadership development by allowing each Squire to advance at his own pace through a series of activities, leading to higher levels of achievement and recognition. Any Squire who achieves the highest level of recognition, as a "Squire of the Body of Christ," will, of necessity, have been well-schooled in the basics of the faith and Church, the Knights of Columbus, and life in marriage, family and community. Any Squire who reaches the "Squire of the Body of Christ" level will know that he has reached a considerable height in Catholic leadership development.

By now, every Squire in the Order should have been given a copy of the Squire "Fact Book" and the "Achievement Level Requirements with Squire Advancement Record" booklet. Every counselor and Squire should also have seen the Powerpoint presentation outlining the basics of the "Squire Advancement Program." This presentation could be shown during a circle meeting, or Squires can access it themselves on-line at www.kofc.org/squires.

Circle officers and counselors should review the "Achievement Level Requirements with Squire Advancement Record" booklet to determine which activities might be incorporated into a circle meeting. For example, part of a circle meeting could be spent on learning the basics of parliamentary procedure. (The basics of parliamentary procedure are outlined on pages 6 and 7 of the Squires "Fact Book," and in the "Fact Book" section of the counselor's handbook.) A couple of officers or other Squires could present a short skit as an example of how parliamentary procedure is used when debating a certain issue. The Squire Advancement counselor can then sign off on participating Squires' "Page" or "Shield Bearer" achievements concerning parliamentary procedure.
