From
The State Advocate
At the
regional meetings I briefed everyone on the importance of securing some form of
liability insurance to protect the council and its leadership from any legal
action during the conduct of any social or fundraising activities. I have
posted this information on the State Website as well as instructions on how to
incorporate the council. We live in a world where unscrupulous individuals are
seeking a fast buck and will look for any opportunity to take legal action
against any organization they feel they will be able to provide a substantial
settlement.
Each council,
whether they are affiliated with a parish and conduct meetings at a parish hall
or those councils who have council homes need to be protected from legal
action. Councils need to establish an incorporated “Columbus Club” type
organization as a legal entity to protect the members and officers in the event
of legal action. If not incorporated, a council’s Grand Knight and other
officers may be sued individually if there is an accident or incident occurring
during a K of C sponsored event. None of us can afford to have a legal action
directed toward us.
I urge each
Grand Knight to go to the website and view these documents. Obtain some form of
liability insurance and pursue incorporating the council. I stand ready to
support and assist you in your efforts and if I can be of any assistance at all
please do not hesitate to contact me. If I don’t have the answer I’m sure I can
get it for you from New Haven.
